In a news conference on Friday Morning, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said that the county has no more pediatric beds left.
“If your child’s in a car wreck, if your child has a congenital heart defect or something, and needs an ICU bed, or more likely if they have COVID and need an ICU bed, we don’t have one. Your child will wait for another child to die,” Jenkins said about the disheartening situation in Dallas.
The judge said that no ICU beds have been available for the children in the Dallas country for at least 24 hours.
CNN cited the Texas Department of State Health Services saying, the shortage of ICU beds is related to the shortage of medical staff.
“They can’t use beds that aren’t staffed. With the increase in COVID cases, hospitals are experiencing a shortage of people to staff the beds that they are licensed for,” Department spokesperson Lara Anton said.
Earlier this week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott had announced more than 2,500 medical staff would be deployed to the hospital in the state to help with an increasing number of COVID-19 patients.
According to the State's Data, more than 11,200 people are hospitalized in Texas, and roughly 323 ICU beds are left available.
