The New York governor Andrew Cuomo has finally resigned after the pressure to resign from all across the political spectrum.

He has been found to have been involved in multiple sexual harassments, most of them with the women who worked for him. The governor announced his resignation on Tuesday Morning. He said his resignation will be effective within the next 14 days.

He lost support from his party establishment. President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Leader Chuck Schummer, etc calling for his resignation.

Kathy Hochul, Cuomo's lieutenant governor, also called his conduct “repulsive and unlawful”.

She said, “I agree with Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It is the right thing to do and in the best interest of New Yorkers. As someone who has served at all levels of government and is next in the line of succession, I am prepared to lead as New York state’s 57th governor.”

Hochul, now, will be the first woman to lead the state of New York. The state assembly majority leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, will step up to become the lieutenant governor. She called the resignation a demonstration of “our ability to build a more accountable system of government”.

The governor who presented himself as a champion of the revived #MeToo movement was first sparked by accusations against the now-convicted film mogul Harvey Weinstein in 2017. But on Tuesday, Cuomo said that in his mind he had “never crossed the line with anyone.”

“I did not realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn.”

He also said there was “no factual basis” for the most serious allegation against him. This is that he groped his former aide Brittany Commisso’s breast, which prompted a criminal complaint that is being investigated by the sheriff’s office in Albany county, where the state capital and Cuomo’s executive offices and mansion are located.

“The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let the government get back to governing. And therefore, that’s what I’ll do,” he said.
