On Tuesday night, a speeding vehicle rammed into a parked bus in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, crushing 18 passengers sleeping on the road to death and injuring ten more.
According to NDTV News, the incident occurred on the national highway in Barabanki district, roughly 30 kilometers from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow. People were sleeping on the road in front of a bus that had broken down while traveling from Haryana to Bihar.
Around 130 people had departed from near Ambala in Haryana for Bihar, according to Bharat, a survivor, but their bus broke down on Tuesday evening, and because the repair was expected to take time, many of them came out.
“On the road, a few people were sleeping, eating, and resting. A truck struck with the parked bus a few hours later, around midnight, resulting in many casualties,” he said.
Many of the 130 persons who perished were laborers, but the exact number of those who died has yet to be determined.
When a speeding truck slammed into the parked bus from behind, the bus accelerated forward, crushing the passengers. The injured were transferred to a nearby hospital, and the police are investigating the accident further.
Yamuna Prasad, the superintendent of police in Barabanki, told Reuters that the vehicle was "overloaded" with roughly 150 passengers. At least ten individuals were hurt, he claimed and were taken to Lucknow, the state capital, for treatment.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the disaster and stated that the next of kin of those killed in the Barabanki accident would get Rs 200,000 (£1,937) each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. Each injured person would receive Rs 50,000 (£484).
He conveyed his condolences and that he was "very sad." He said he spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and that plans are being made for the proper treatment of those injured in the disaster.
