Two employees died after a chemical leak at a plant in La Porte, Texas, on Tuesday evening, according to company officials.
According to company spokesperson Chevalier Gray, the incident occurred about 7:35 p.m. and entailed an acetic acid spill at the LyondellBasell unit in the La Porte Complex. On the scene, Tuesday night was emergency personnel from the City of La Porte and Channel Industries Mutual Aid.
Gray said two persons "suffered fatal injuries" and four others "suffered burns" and were sent to the hospital for treatment. The organization stated that it was working closely with emergency personnel to ensure that all employees were safe.
According to Gray, air sampling revealed no levels of concern for the community.
“The area is located in unincorporated Harris County, near La Porte. According to a statement released by La Porte EMS, “there is no shelter in place or other protective measures being recommended for the La Porte community at this time.”
Judge Line Hidalgo of Harris County published a message on Twitter that she is "heartbroken."
Hidalgo tweeted, "Heartbroken to hear of the two fatalities at the Lyondell Basell facility in La Porte." “Our county and other first responder agencies are working to assist the other workers who have been affected and to ensure that the incident is under control. Thank you to everyone that helped.”
