Tunisian President Kais Saied sacked Prime Minister Hicham Mechichi and has taken the power for himself after a series of anti Government protests grow nationwide.

People are holding protests in Tunisia dissatisfied with the country's coronavirus response. The protests and demonstrations have been increasingly violent.

President Saed also suspended the country's parliament.

Saed's actions have been referred to by his political opponents as a constitutional coup.

This is the largest crisis in the country's constitution that was formulated in 2011 and aimed to have check and balance through shared powers between President, Prime Minister, and the Parliament.

"We have taken these decisions... until social peace returns to Tunisia and until we save the state," said Mr. Saied.

After the announcement, crowds of people flooded the capital and other cities to support the president, cheering and honking car horns in scenes.
