In retaliation for incendiary balloon launches from the Palestinian enclave, Israel attacked Islamist terrorist positions in Gaza with airstrikes on Friday, in the latest disturbance since a ceasefire ended the conflict in May.

The strikes, according to Hamas security sources, attacked training sites in the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip. There were no reported injuries.

“In response to the arson balloons fired towards Israeli territory today, (military) fighter jets struck... a weapons manufacturing site belonging to the Hamas terror organization,” Israel's army said in a statement.

Incendiary balloon launches from Gaza triggered four minor fires in Israel's southern Eshkol region, near the Gaza border, on Thursday, according to Israel's fire department.

According to a fire department statement, the fires were "small and not dangerous" and were promptly put out. According to the statement, “a fire investigator... determined that all of the fires were caused by incendiary balloons (from Gaza).”

On May 21, Israel and Hamas, and other Palestinian armed factions headquartered in the enclave declared a truce after eleven days of deadly conflict.

The identity of the Gaza-based group responsible for the balloon launch was unknown at the time.

Since the ceasefire, there have been many flare-ups, including a series of balloon launches last month. Airstrikes have been launched by Israel in retaliation. Following a firefight on June 18, Israel's army chief ordered troops to prepare for "a variety of scenarios, including a resumption of hostilities."

According to Gaza authorities, the violence killed 260 Palestinians, including some fighters. According to the police and army, rockets fired from Gaza killed 13 people in Israel, including a soldier.

Since 2007, when Hamas gained power, Israel has maintained a severe siege on Gaza, which the government claims is vital to keep armed organizations out of the region.
