Iran's largest navy ship sunk

The Kharg, Iran's largest navy ship, sank in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday after catching fire, but the crew was saved safely, according to Iranian media.

The latest incident in a region of sensitive waterways, where there have been suspicions of assault on ships controlled by arch-enemies Iran and Israel, received no additional explanation.
The fire on Iran's largest naval vessel began approximately 2:25 a.m. on Wednesday near the Iranian port of Jask, where it was on a training operation, according to state television.

The Gulf of Oman joins the Strait of Hormuz, which transports nearly a fifth of the world's oil.

The Kharg's rescue operations lasted several hours, according to a statement on state television, with all of the crew disembarking.

The yacht sank after all efforts to salvage it failed, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
