The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 have responded to reports that Mneskin singer Damiano David used drugs during the competition.
Maneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night with their song Zitti e buoni, which earned 524 points. However, rumors of drug use tainted their win, with many believing a viral video showed Damiano ‘using cocaine.'
During a press conference last night, the lead singer flatly refuted the allegations, and now the European Broadcasting Union has weighed in on the matter, announcing that Damiano will submit to a drug test.
‘We are aware of the speculation about the video clip of the Italian winners of the Eurovision Song Contest in the Green Room last night,' they said in a statement.
‘The band has categorically denied any substance use, and the singer in question will take a voluntary drug test when he returns home.' They demanded this last night, but the EBU was unable to accommodate them right away.'
‘The band, their management, and head of the delegation have told us that no drugs were present in the Green Room and explained that a glass was broken at their table and it was being cleared by the singer,' they added, confirming Damiano's explanation that he bent down because he found glass.
‘After an on-site search, the EBU will confirm that broken glass was discovered.' We're still reviewing footage and will provide updates as soon as we have more details.'
During last night's press conference, a reporter asked Damiano about the viral video, to which the singer responded, "Thomas [guitarist Thomas Raggi] broke a glass... Please don't say that because I don't use drugs.
‘Don't say anything like that. Please don't say anything about cocaine.'
‘We are so surprised by what some people are saying Damiano is doing drugs,' the band said in a statement posted to their Instagram stories.
'We are adamantly opposed to drugs, and we have never used cocaine.' We're willing to be put to the test because we have nothing to hide. We are here to perform music, and we are ecstatic about our Eurovision victory, and we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported us.'
‘Rock 'n' Roll is eternal. They went on to say, 'We love you.'
