23 dead when Mexico city metro overpass collided onto the road

At least 23 people got killed and 70 got injured when an elevated section of Mexico city metro collapsed and sent a subway car plunging toward a busy boulevard on late Monday.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico city said, “There are unfortunately children among the dead.”

The accident is one of the deadliest subway accidents in the city which is one of the busiest in the world.

Sheinbaum also said seven of the injured are severely injured and are undergoing surgery among the 49 hospitalized.

The overpass was about 5 meters (16 feet) above the road in the borough of Tlahuac, but the train ran above a concrete median strip, which apparently lessened the casualties among motorists on the road below.
