Volkswagen of America on Tuesday caught up the headlines after an unfinished press release leaked in US news media announcing that the company is officially changing its name to Voltswagen of America. (VOLTS as in the Electricity)
The pun intended rebranding as the company is selling its electric vehicles actually turned out to be an April Fools prank planned for April First.
The company's US spokesman said in a statement the rebranding was supposed to be an April Fools prank. “The renaming was designed to be an announcement in the spirit of April Fool’s Day, highlighting the launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV,” Mike Tolbert said in a statement.
CNBC wrote that it had confirmed the name change through sources inside the company. However, the source apparently fooled everybody, before it was April the First yet.
The company, however, clearly stated that it is not rebranding itself.
