Authorities in North Vancouver, British Columbia, said a man went on a stabbing spree inside and around a library on Saturday, killing one woman and injuring six others.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team's Sergeant Frank Jang said a suspect had been apprehended. He said the man is in his twenties and has had previous run-ins with the law.
Officials, according to Jang, do not yet have any knowledge about a motive.
Steve Mossop, one of the witnesses, said he and his partner were stuck in traffic after seeing a bloodied woman who told them she had just been stabbed. He said they then saw multiple casualties within 100 meters of each other.
Mossop explained, “There was a man, an older woman, a younger woman, a mother – a random group of individuals in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“He seemed to be only moving in a direction, and whoever happened to be in his path happened to be a victim,” Mossop said of the attacker.
Bill Blair, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident on Twitter, calling it a "senseless act of aggression."
