Forty-Seven Democrats and four Republicans voted New Mexico Representative Deb Haaland as the next Interior Secretary making her the first Native American to hold a Cabinet post.

The Senate Republicans who objected have called her a climate change "extremist." Her views on fossil fuels have made her the target of the conservatives.

She took a stand in favor of the Green New Deal when she was a member of the Natural Resources Committee. She also opposed the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline.

GOP leaders argue that undermining America's fossil fuel energy production will hurt the American Economy.

“We should not undermine America’s energy production, and we should not hurt our own economy,” GOP Senator John Barrasso said during a confirmation hearing last month.

Haaland has been deemed radical by the Conservatives.

Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schummer responded to her election as the Interior Secretary saying her being elected  “creates a government that more embodies the full richness and diversity of this country.”
