After the Beishangul-Gumuz massacre that killed more than hundred people including children on Wednesday, Ethiopia’s military has killed more than 40 men who were suspected to be involved in the massacre. The reports added that five of the current and former government officials have been arrested over the manslaughter. The attackers torched the villager’s homes, shot and stabbed the people of Metekel zone of Benishangul-Gumuz region on Wednesday night. The attackers’ identity is still unclear they seem to have targeted ethnic minority communities that are viewed as “settlers” by the Gumuz community, said Amnesty International. In the recent years, Ethiopia has been experiencing surge in political, ethnic and religious violence. More land and power for a particular community has been the main motive of conflicts in Ethiopia, with attempts to drive out minority people they regard as outsiders. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the massacre as tragic and said the government had deployed a force to the area to help find the solution to the conflict and punish the ones involved. 42 people were killed in the military operation to hunt down the assailants. However, state media hasn’t given the identity of people who were killed. The reports said various weapons like bows and arrows had been seized. Among the five arrested in association with the violence, one was a deputy minister in the government. On what charges were they arrested hasn’t been made public yet.
