Jihadist militants on motorcycle killed six French tourists and two Nigeriens (a guide and a driver) in a wildlife park east of Niger’s capital on Sunday, according to the officials.
The group was attacked in a giraffe reserve near Koure region about 70km southeast of Niamey in the Tillaberi region, where ISIS-linked militants are active.
Hundreds of people visit each year who want to see the last herds of giraffe.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The six French nationals worked for an international aid group, Niger’s Defence Minister Issoufou Katambe told Reuters agency.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed French nationals had been killed in Niger and expressed his deep condolences for the victims’ families.
The French government warns people against traveling to large parts of Niger where militants group, including Boko Haram, violence group link to al-Qaeda, and the Islamic State group operates in the area.
