At least one person died and 35 were injured as Typhoon Khanun hit the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa Wednesday, leaving more than a third of households without power.

According to Okinawa police and firefighters, a 90-year-old man was crushed to death when strong winds collapsed his garage.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said the slow-moving typhoon was about 56 miles west of Kumejima island as of 5 p.m. local time Wednesday. Winds were up to 145 mph.

Khanun was expected to continue bringing heavy rains as it moved slowly west-northwest toward Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima over the next 24 hours.

It is the sixth typhoon of the season.

Authorities warned of strong winds and storm surges with torrential rains and lightning.

Okinawa's power company reported that as of 4 p.m. local time Wednesday 202,650 households were without power.

Khanun forced the cancellation of flights from Okinawa. All flights to and from Naha, Miyako and Shin-Ishigaki airports were canceled, impacting at least 65.000 people.

High waves and winds from the storm will continue Thursday.
