According to The Associated Press, at least six people were killed in a crowd outside a stadium holding an African Cup of Nations football match in Cameroon.

The crush occurred when fans fought their way into Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon's capital, to witness Cameroon face Comoros in the last round-of-16 knockout game of the soccer tournament.

At least 50,000 people attempted to attend the event, according to officials. As per AP, the stadium's capacity is 60,000, but COVID-19 limits meant it should have only been 80 percent full.

At least 40 people were hurt in the incident, according to officials at the neighboring Messassi hospital. They were rushed to the hospital with the assistance of police and citizens.

“Some of the injured are in desperate condition,” hospital nurse Olinga Prudence told the AP. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital.”

This comes as the governor of the central region of Cameroon, Naseri Paul Biya, said there could more deaths from this incident. 

“We are not in a position to give you the total number of casualties,” Biya said.

The new tragedy comes after a fire broke out at the Livs Night Club in Yaounde's Bastos area on Sunday, killing 17 individuals.

The African Cup of Nations' governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), issued a statement saying it is aware of the situation, according to the Associated Press.

In a statement, CAF said that it is currently investigating the situation and is trying to get more details on "what transpired."

“ We are in constant communication with the Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee,” it said.
