According to the regional governor of Luhansk, Russian soldiers blasted a school in eastern Ukraine, killing up to sixty people.

According to Governor Serhiy Gaidai, a bomb was thrown on a school in Bilohorivka where an estimated 90 people, or "almost the entire village," were taking refuge.

"The fire was extinguished after nearly four hours, then the rubble was cleared, and two bodies were discovered," Mr. Gaidai posted on Sunday on the messaging app Telegram. "Thirty individuals were rescued from the wreckage, seven of whom sustained injuries.

Sixty individuals indeed perished beneath the debris of buildings.

According to reports, a Russian aircraft dropped the bomb on the village school, approximately 11 kilometers from the frontline.

On Saturday, the incident occurred at about 4.30 p.m., igniting the structure, which took nearly four hours to extinguish.

Mr. Gaidai stated that the rescue attempt had also been hampered by severe fighting.

"Considering it was an aircraft bomb and not an artillery shell, when the explosion occurred, the temperature was extremely high," he told the BBC.

"Of course, our state service emergency workers will attempt to clear the debris as quickly as possible, but the likelihood that anyone is still alive is remote."

He stated that he hoped for the best and will provide an update when "maybe, someone will actually survive."

Ukraine and its western allies have accused Russia of targeting people during its "special military operation," which Russia has denied.

Women, children, and the elderly who had been stranded at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol's southeastern city for several days due to Russian bombardment were finally evacuated on Saturday night.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine stated that more than 300 citizens had been rescued from the Azovstal steelworks and that authorities would now focus on evacuating the injured and medical personnel.

According to various Ukrainian sources, the figures vary.

The Ukrainian government collaborated with the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to rescue the civilians who had taken refuge in tunnels beneath the steelworks.

It is believed that some 2,000 Ukrainian troops remain at the factory, the final bastion of resistance in a city nearly decimated by Russian bombing.

On Monday, Russia will celebrate Triumph Day, commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is suspected that Russia is attempting to rid the plant of all resistance in preparation.
