Iran executed Arman Abdolali on Wednesday, rejecting calls from human rights organizations to spare his life.

Abdolali, 25, was hanged early Wednesday after his family refused to forgive him for murdering Ghazaleh Shakour when he was a minor, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. Shakour was, according to reports, Abdolali's girlfriend.

Abdolali was prosecuted and convicted of capital murder in 2016. He was 17 years old at the time.

According to Amnesty International, Abdolali stated that his confessions were obtained through torture.

Amnesty International claimed last month that Abdolali's trial "was plagued by grave abuses, including the use of torture-tainted 'confessions.'

According to the London-based rights group, his execution had previously been postponed owing to international pressure.

In a statement condemning the execution, eminent Iranian lawyer Babak Paknia stated that the judgment against Abdolali contained "numerous flaws in the opinion of several jurists."

Iran, behind China, has the highest rate of executions in the world. According to the Oslo-based rights group Iran Human Rights, the Islamic Republic has murdered 268 people since this year.
