Armenian armed forces began unprovoked fire Tuesday on Azerbaijani army positions near the border, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported.

The Azerbaijani army's positions in the Kalbajar region's Yellija and Barmagbina settlements; the Gadabay region's Galakend, Daryurd, Novoivanovka, and Garaveliler settlements; the Tovuz region's Aghbulag, Aghdam, Garalar, Gosha, Kokhanebi, Hajally, Alibeyli, and Asrik Jirdakhan

Armenian troops targeted army positions using weapons of various calibers, according to the statement.

"Azerbaijani forces responded appropriately," it stated, adding that the operational situation is currently under Azerbaijani control.

Since 1991, when the Armenian military captured Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, an area internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven nearby districts, relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been hostile.

On Sept. 27, 2020, new battles occurred, with Armenian forces targeting civilians and Azerbaijani troops, violating humanitarian cease-fire agreements.

On Nov. 10, 2020, the conflict was brought to a conclusion by a Russia-brokered accord.

Azerbaijan liberated many cities and 300 communities and villages occupied by Armenia for over 30 years during the 44-day conflict.
