The Pentagon has said that the US airstrike has destroyed a number of facilities at border control points. Officials said that the bases included those of Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Suhada.
The US claims that these militants groups in Syria are backed by Iran.
This is the first air strike ordered by the new US president Joe Biden, which comes just over a month after he took the office.
There have been no reports of casualties yet.
The US described the attack as a counter-response to the attack at the US military base at Erbil International Airport, Iraq.
John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesperson said that the attacks were done at President Biden’s direction “against infrastructures utilized by the Iranian-backed militant groups in Syria.”
Kirby added, “President Biden will act to protect American and Coalition personnel.”
He also said that the attacks have been made “in a deliberate manner” to “de-escalate the overall situation in Syria and Iraq.”
Joe Biden has become the third president in a row to launch airstrikes on Syria. Although Biden and Trump seem to be drastically different in domestic affairs, they might not fall far off when it comes to the situation in the Middle east.
