On Friday morning, the Georgian interior ministry said that a retired military veteran killed five persons in the town of Sagarejo before committing suicide (20 January).
According to the Georgian Ministry of the Interior, the criminal served between 2006 and 2021 in the Georgian Defense Forces, notably in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. Among the deceased is 38-year-old police officer Otar Gvinashvili, who sustained fatal injuries while attempting to defend another individual during the shooting. Five additional people were injured.
The Georgian Minister of the Interior, Vakhtang Gomelauri, who arrived at the site early on Friday morning, stated that the criminal was with his adult kid, who fled the apartment after the incident. The 49-year-old suspect allegedly committed suicide as security personnel entered his apartment.
Neighbours reportedly told local media that the shooter had rented his apartment and received psychological therapy. There is no known motive for the horrific shooting at this time.
A doctor from a nearby hospital was the first to report the tragedy; he complained on Facebook that he could not reach the scene to assist the injured.
