Sunday, amid heightened tensions, dozens of Chinese military planes and four ships were detected around Taiwan, according to Taiwan's defense ministry.

At least 28 Chinese aircraft breached the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial buffer zone separating China and Taiwan.

The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army stated that "joint combat readiness patrols and actual combat drills" were performed to "resolutely counter the provocative actions of external forces and Taiwan's independence separatist forces."

The defense ministry of Taiwan has activated aircraft, ships, and land-based missile systems in response to the intrusion. It is the second time this week that Chinese military planes have flown near Taiwan.

Tensions peaked in August during then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, with China increasing the frequency of military exercises surrounding the island in recent months.

This Thursday, Jake Sullivan, the White House's national security adviser, stated that he believes conflict can be avoided.

"There is a possibility of conflict with Taiwan, but I am confident that through prudent management, we can ensure that this contingency never occurs. And this is our obligation, "Sullivan said to NPR.

During the November G20 summit in Bali, President Xi Jinping warned President Biden that the Taiwan issue was "very core of China's core interests" and the "first red line" in bilateral relations.

President Biden stated after that meeting that they did "not think there's any imminent attempt on the part of China to invade Taiwan."
