According to the Malaysian fire service, a landslide slammed a campsite south of Kuala Lumpur early Friday morning, killing two people and burying 51 others.
A fire department official in central Selangor estimated that 79 individuals were at the Batang Kali campsite, some 50 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, when the incident occurred.
The official informed The Associated Press that a toddler and a lady were found deceased. According to the official, three persons were injured during the search for an estimated 51 missing people. Additional 23 individuals have been rescued.
Bernama reported that Norazam Khamis, chief of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, stated that firemen began arriving at the location half an hour after getting a distress call at 2:24 a.m.
According to him, the landslide dropped from an estimated height of 98 feet and covered an area of around one acre. The campsite is located on an organic farm near Genting Highlands, a major tourist attraction with theme parks and Malaysia's lone casino.
According to the farm's website, there are three campsites with amenities that are popular with locals, and visitors can bring their own tents and equipment or rent them from the farm.
