Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned his U.S. colleague on Monday that the U.S. should cease its efforts to limit and repress China and avoid building barriers to the relationship.
According to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry, Wang told U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a phone conversation on Monday that export limitations imposed by Washington on China have gravely harmed the country's lawful rights and must be addressed.
Blinken also highlighted Russia's war against Ukraine and the threats it poses to global security and economic stability, according to a second statement from the U.S. Department of State.
The United States has frequently emphasized the need of maintaining and keeping open lines of communication between the two nations, but has also recently emphasized the repercussions if Beijing were to support Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
China, a key ally of Russia, has taken a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict, criticizing Western sanctions on Russia but refraining from backing or aiding the military campaign.
According to the statement, Blinken also emphasized to his Chinese counterpart the necessity to manage U.S.-China ties responsibly.
Last week, President Joe Biden stated that the United States does not seek war with China, and President Xi Jinping stated that China is eager to cooperate with the United States to find methods for both parties to profit from getting along.
The remarks are made in advance of next month's G20 summit in Bali, where the two leaders may meet on the sidelines.
