Wednesday, the Israeli Air Force fired missiles at the airport in Aleppo, the capital of Syria, according to Syrian state media. Consequently, Damascus air-defense systems fired upon Israeli missiles aiming south of the capital.
"Nearly eight o'clock in the evening, the Israeli enemy targeted Aleppo International Airport with a missile attack that caused material damage," a military source informed the Syrian state news agency SANA late in the day.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based opposition war monitor, this is the 23rd Israeli attack in Syria in 2022. The one near the capital occurred around an hour after the one at the airport.
"Four Israeli shells hit a runway of the Aleppo International Airport and warehouses in its vicinity, causing fires and explosions," the observatory reported.
Additionally, the observatory asserted that Russian and regime forces were stationed at the airport. According to the organization, the Russians were aware of the impending purported Israeli airstrikes and began deploying 10 minutes before the attack.
