Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, is under investigation, according to the police.

Following a political speech he gave on Saturday, he is accused of making threats against the police and judiciary.

Tensions are high in the country, with fans of the former leader amassing outside his home and threatening to "take over" if he is arrested.

Mr. Khan has been a vociferous opponent of the administration and the country's military since his April ouster.

After the cricketer-turned-politician accused authorities of torturing his close aide, himself being held on sedition charges, police started investigating him.

In a public address on Saturday, Mr. Khan criticized Islamabad's police chief and a female judge over his party colleague's imprisonment and alleged maltreatment.

"You should also get ready as we will take action against you," he remarked straight to the pair.

According to police investigations, Mr. Khan may have violated the country's anti-terrorism law by reportedly threatening state officials.

After word of the probe leaked, hundreds of the former prime minister's supporters gathered outside his home in Islamabad, threatening to "take over" the capital if police attempted to detain him.

Police at the site stated that they were not there to arrest the former leader but to ensure law and order.

The probe comes at a time of heightened tension between the government of Pakistan and Mr. Khan, who was removed from power in April by a vote of no confidence.

Since then, the former leader has toured the nation delivering a series of heated speeches demanding new elections and harshly criticizing the government and army.

Saturday, Pakistan's media regulator said that live television broadcasts of Mr. Khan's speeches would be prohibited, accusing him of hate speech against official institutions.

The former leader asserts that the government is attempting to silence him. In Rawalpindi, he criticized the restriction at another campaign gathering on Sunday.

"What crime has been done by Imran Khan? Never would I tolerate this gang of thieves "he explained to his supporters.

Later, Mr. Khan accused the government of limiting access to YouTube during the middle of his speech to prevent people from listening to him live.

Despite being removed from power earlier this year in a vote of no confidence, Imran Khan continues to enjoy the support of many Pakistani people.

Last month, his PTI party startled adversaries by capturing control of a vital provincial assembly in Punjab, upsetting the PML-N in what was anticipated to be an easy victory.

The by-election victory in July was viewed by many as an indication of Mr. Khan's sustained popularity at the polls and a preview of what could occur if the early elections he is seeking are called.

In 2018, the charismatic politician was elected prime minister, but towards the conclusion of his term, he fell out with Pakistan's powerful army. Following a string of defections, he lost his majority in the legislature.
