According to local officials on Sunday, dozens of people died overnight due to heavy flooding caused by seasonal rains in eastern Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.
The Associated Press footage showed locals in the Khushi area of Logar province, south of the Afghan capital Kabul, cleaning up their damaged homes after the flooding.
Abdullah Mufaker, the head of the province's natural disaster response body, stated that it was still unknown how many people were killed and injured by the rising waves, but at least nine people were killed.
"At this time, the exact number is unknown, and people have gone to remove the bodies," he said.
A village elder, Del Agha, stated that the flooding in Khushi was unprecedented in its history. He said, "It destroyed all the people's animals, homes, and agricultural land." People have been driven to seek refuge in the mountains due to homelessness.
According to the country's natural disaster management organization, flooding caused by monsoon rains killed at least 36 people in neighboring Pakistan, including 11 districts bordering Afghanistan. In Pakistan, rescue teams aided by the military have evacuated thousands of stranded people to safety, and more precipitation is forecast this week.
From July to September, the monsoon season occurs.
Last week, torrential rains triggered flash floods in northern Afghanistan that killed at least 31 people and left scores missing.
