A Law & Order: Organized Crime crew member was shot and died early Tuesday morning while working near the show's New York City set.
The crew member, identified by police as Johnny Pizarro, 31, of Queens, was sitting in his car in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn at 5:15 am when an unknown individual approached the vehicle, unlocked the door, and shot him in the neck and head. There has been no arrest, and it is unknown whether the two had a prior connection.
Mr. Pizarro labored to clear parking spaces and guard equipment trucks on Tuesday morning as the show prepared to film in the neighborhood. After the incident, he was sent to a local hospital, where he died at 6 am.
"We were saddened and shocked to learn that one of our crew members was murdered early this morning," NBC and Universal Television stated in a joint statement. "We are assisting local law enforcement with their ongoing investigations." During this challenging time, we ask that you respect the privacy of his family and friends.
According to law officials, it is still unclear if Mr. Pizarro was shot on the entire set or if filming was scheduled to occur at the shooting scene, as Deadline reported on Tuesday.
The office of New York City mayor Eric Adams expressed sympathies on Tuesday morning. According to Fabien Levy, the mayor's press secretary, the safety of all New Yorkers is the city's priority. "We offer our deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time. We will work diligently to bring the suspect to justice and stem the current tide of gun violence."
Christopher Meloni, formerly of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, plays Detective Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Organized Crime, which will premiere its third season in the autumn. It is one of NBC's three Law & Order shows filmed on location in New York.
