Thursday night, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa emailed a resignation letter to the country's parliament speaker, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The source noted that it was unclear whether the letter delivered shortly after Rajapaksa's arrival in Singapore would be accepted in electronic format.
People in Colombo, the nation's capital, set fireworks in joy upon hearing of his resignation. According to NDTV, the Speaker acknowledged that he had received Rajapaksa's resignation letter.
His resignation comes on the same day protestors claimed they would halt their occupation of official buildings, including the presidential palace, the presidential secretariat, and the prime minister's office.
Rajapaksa arrived in Singapore Thursday evening as Sri Lankans awaited his resignation as president and the country's military urged demonstrators to remain peaceful. It stated in a press release that it has the authority to use force "to prevent the destruction of property and life."
The foreign ministry of Singapore acknowledged that Rajapaksa had arrived in the nation, stating that he was permitted admission for a "private visit." It continued, "He has not requested asylum, nor been granted asylum." Singapore does not often grant asylum claims."
