Saturday, Uzbekistan declared a month-long state of emergency in the Karakalpakstan autonomous province, which protests have rocked.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the decree following protests over planned constitutional modifications impacting the region's autonomous status.
The formal order states that the state of emergency would last from July 3 to August 2.
The decree restricts entry and exit from the province and prohibits all public events. In addition, it imposes temporary limits to protect public order, such as vehicle entry restrictions, personal searches, etc.
Mirziyoyev traveled to the region's capital of Nukus, where protesters attempted to attack government facilities and declared that no changes would be made to Karakalpakstan.
"It is necessary to leave the draft norms of the Republic of Karakalpakstan's legal status unchanged," he stated, adding, "We will undoubtedly build a new Uzbekistan and a new Karakalpakstan together."
