Tuesday, a Ukrainian court sentenced two captured Russian soldiers to 11.5 years in prison for shelling a community in eastern Ukraine. This is the second war crimes conviction since Russia's invasion began in February.
Alexander Bobikin and Alexander Ivanov, who listened to the judgment while standing in a reinforced glass box at the Kotelevska district court in central Ukraine last week, pled guilty.
"Bobikin and Ivanov's guilt has been fully established," remarked Judge Evhen Bolybok.
Both admitted last week to being members of an artillery battalion that fired on Kharkiv targets from the Russian region of Belgorod.
According to the prosecutors, the bombardment wrecked a school in Derhachi but caused no injuries.
After crossing the border and continuing the fire, artillery driver Bobikin and gunner Ivanov were apprehended.
The prosecution had requested the court sentence the two Russian soldiers to 12 years in prison, while the defense argued that the two had been obeying orders and had repented.
