According to officials, the collapse of a 10-story building in southwestern Iran on Monday killed at least four people and injured scores more.

Mojtaba Khaledi, the spokesman for Iran's national medical emergency organization, stated that 25 people were injured in the Abadan collapse.

However, according to some reports, there were five fatalities and eighty injured.

Anadolu Agency has gathered from official sources that more than 150 people were inside the under-construction Metro Pol commercial building on the bustling Amiri Street when it fell.

The cause of the collapse was first unknown. As of the most recent news, rescue operations were in progress, and all nearby structures have been evacuated.

Local media cited Mehdi Valipour, the Iranian Red Crescent Society chairman, claiming that at least 80 people may be buried under the wreckage.

At about 12:30 local time, the event was reported (0800GMT).

Provincial officials in Abadan informed state media that the building is being constructed in a densely populated residential neighborhood, which could increase the toll.

Online videos and images depicted injured individuals being rushed to hospitals, some in severe condition, while people lined up outside hospitals to donate blood.

According to Waheed Shabani, managing director of the Red Crescent Society in Khuzestan, four fast response teams from adjacent cities have been dispatched to assist with rescue and relief activities.
