After an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the delivery of new arms and equipment to Ukraine.

Trudeau, speaking at a news conference following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, also said that Canada would impose new penalties on Russian persons and organizations in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. He stated that Canada was reopening its embassy in Kyiv.

Trudeau stated that Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia, was accountable for "war crimes."

"It is clear that Vladimir Putin is responsible for heinous war crimes," the Canadian prime minister stated at a news conference with the Ukrainian president, adding that "there must be accountability" and that he had "witnessed firsthand the brutality of Russia's illegal war."

Earlier in the day, Trudeau traveled outside the capital to Irpin.
