The Islamic State (IS) extremist group claims it has fired a number of rockets from Afghanistan into the territory of neighboring Tajikistan, according to an Afghan media report.
The report was not immediately confirmed by Tajik or Taliban authorities.
The Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) news agency reported on May 8 that an IS press release claimed the militants on May 7 fired seven rockets from the Khawaja Ghar district of Afghanistan's Takhar Province toward unspecified military targets in Tajikistan.
Other Afghan media, citing unnamed local sources, also reported that rockets were fired into Tajikistan.
Sources close to Tajik law enforcement agencies told RFE/RL that there were no reports of shelling on the territory of Tajikistan from Afghanistan.
The local IS affiliate, the Islamic State in Khorasan Province (IS-K), is a foe of the Taliban group that took over Afghanistan in August following a blitz offensive amid the withdrawal of U.S.-led international troops.
IS-K has claimed responsibility for a series of recent bombings, the worst of which was an attack last month on a Shi'ite mosque in northern Mazar-e-Sharif that killed at least 12 worshippers and left 58 people injured.
