Dozens of Muslim faithful rioted at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque compound, leading Israeli security officials to use riot control tactics after Jewish visitors were permitted to approach the Temple Mount for the first time in weeks.
MK Yomtob Kalfon of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's nationalist Yamina Party was also among the visitors who got jeers from other Jewish tourists.
According to Israel Police, scores of Palestinian rioters hurled stones and other missiles at officers while chanting nationalist slogans. According to a police statement, forces drove the rioters back into the mosque as they began throwing objects "while damaging and desecrating the mosque,"
According to police, visits to worshipers in the Temple Mount area continue uninterrupted, and security forces are trying to secure and preserve order at the site. Additionally, police have blamed a proliferation of online misinformation as a source of tensions at the Jerusalem shrine.
"That is fake news that has no basis in reality and is intended to deceive the public, intensify, and exacerbate an already volatile situation. We urge the public not to believe fake news and wild incitement promoted mostly by antagonistic groups on social media "According to the police released a statement.
"It should be underlined that there has been no change to the status of affairs on the Temple Mount in terms of prayers or visits by Israelis and tourists for many years. Anyone who violates the regulations in sacred places or commits acts of violence will face zero tolerance."
Based in the Gaza Strip, Hamas, a terrorist organization, vowed Wednesday to unleash mayhem if Jews are permitted to ascend the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on Israel's Independence Day.
"Israel is taking a risk by allowing Jews to enter the al-Aqsa Mosque tomorrow. This escalation will be Israel's fault "According to the terror outfit.
Before Israel's Independence Day celebrations, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also issued a statement.
"We will not hesitate to protect al-Aqsa and Jerusalem and to warn of the dangers associated with the settlers' calls to invade the mosque. We are appealing to al-Aqsa to intervene and oppose the settlements."
