Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in Kyiv Thursday to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and convey Spain’s support and solidarity after the Russian invasion.

The prime minister’s office, La Moncloa, said Sánchez arrived in the Ukrainian capital with his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen.

On Tuesday, the office announced that Sánchez would be traveling to Ukraine in the next few days without specifying the date or more details of the visit due to security reasons.

Sánchez visited a Ukrainian refugee center in southern Spain’s Málaga city Wednesday before traveling to Poland aboard a Spanish Air Force plane.

He then undertook a 10-hour overnight train journey to arrive in Kyiv.

The route was taken by other European leaders and heads of European Union institutions who traveled to the Ukrainian capital to show their support for Zelenskyy.

After their meeting, Sánchez, Zelenskyy, and Frederiksen will hold a joint press conference.

Sánchez said he would convey to Zelenskyy Spain’s “resounding and unequivocal commitment” to Ukraine and assure him of humanitarian and military aid until peace is restored.

Earlier this week, the prime minister announced that the Spanish embassy in Kyiv would open in a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine.

Sánchez said that in addition to sending aid of various kinds to Ukraine, some 134,000 Ukrainian refugees have already arrived in the Málaga port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Of these, 64,000 have already received temporary protection.

The Spanish government has also responded to Ukraine’s requests for weapons by sending a dozen planes with offensive and defensive equipment.

Sánchez’s meeting with Zelenskyy comes after two telephone conversations between the two since the start of the Russian invasion on Feb.24.

The Ukrainian president also delivered a speech on Apr.5 to the Spanish parliament.

Sánchez reiterated Spain’s support for Ukraine on its path to becoming a member of the European Union.

The issue has featured prominently in Zelenskyy’s meetings with the European leaders who have visited him, including European Council president Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
