On Wednesday, two people were arrested in Wellington, New Zealand, after reportedly attempting to breach a police roadblock outside parliament by Covid-19 mandate protesters.
Local sources indicate that demonstrators attempted to walk through the police cordon and onto the steps of parliament at approximately 3 p.m., forcing cops to detain at least two persons.
The scene was captured on video, with a wall of police officers attempting to keep demonstrators away from parliament while reinforcements rushed in to bolster the blockade. One man wearing sunglasses, shorts, and flip-flops was escorted out in handcuffs.
Protesters demanded that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern resign, attempting to downplay the incident in response. "I've seen a range of protests in my time," Ardern told Newstalk ZB.
Additionally, the prime minister stated that the demonstration did not "represent the vast majority of New Zealanders."
Currently, the country demands complete vaccination against Covid-19 for workers in various sectors, including health, education, defense, and emergency services. Additionally, the government has mandated booster immunizations and required New Zealanders to wear medical-grade face masks in enclosed public spaces.
