A Palestinian news agency reported that hundreds of Israeli settlers broke into the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday.
According to a statement from Jordan's Islamic Waqf Department, which supervises Jerusalem's sacred sites, the settlers entered the compound through the Al-Mugharbah Gate while being protected by Israeli police.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest Muslim shrine in the world. Jews refer to the location as the "Temple Mount," claiming it was once the site of two Jewish temples.
Israel has admitted squatters into the complex virtually every day since 2003.
During the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel captured East Jerusalem, including Al-Aqsa. It annexed the entire city in 1980, a move that the international community never acknowledged.
