Jean-Marc Vallée, the director and producer who won an Emmy for directing HBO's "Big Little Lies" and whose 2013 thriller "Dallas Buyers Club" got many Academy Award nods, has died. He was 58 years old.
Vallée died unexpectedly in his cabin near Quebec City, Canada, over the weekend, according to his representative Bumble Ward.
Vallée was lauded for his naturalistic style of filmmaking over the last decade, having directed stars such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
He directed Emily Blunt in 2009's "The Young Victoria" and quickly established himself as a sought-after figure in Hollywood after his film "Dallas Buyers Club," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, won six Academy Award nominations, including best picture.
He frequently used natural light and hand-held cameras and encouraged actors to improvise and wander about within the confines of a scene's location. The crew traversed the Pacific Coast Trail to film Witherspoon in 2014's "Wild."
"They can go anywhere they want," the Canadian director told The Associated Press in a 2014 interview. "It emphasizes storytelling, emotion, and character development. I make an effort to avoid interfering excessively. I am not required to reduce performances. Frequently, the cinematographer and I would say, 'This place is terrible. It's not really pleasant. However, that is life.'"
He reunited with Witherspoon in 2017 to helm the first season of HBO's "Big Little Lies," and directed Adams in 2018's "Sharp Objects." Vallée was honored by the DGA for both.
