After a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the gate of the Russian consulate in Lviv, Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ukrainian charge d'affaires on Friday.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ministry issued "a firm protest" to the charge d'affaires and asked that Ukraine secure the security of the Russian diplomatic mission under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The incident was described as a "terrorist attack" that was "inciting hatred and enmity toward Russia in Ukraine," according to the ministry.

It requested apologies from Ukraine "for Kyiv's failure to fulfill its commitments to provide the necessary protection of the Russian consular institution," as well as guarantees from Ukraine that similar occurrences would not happen again.

Simultaneously, the Russian Embassy in Ukraine wrote to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to express its displeasure.

A Molotov cocktail was thrown towards the fence of the Russian Federation Consulate General in Lviv, according to police.

A preliminary investigation is underway, according to local officials, as law enforcement personnel work to determine the circumstances of the occurrence and the name of the aggressor involved.

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged that Kyiv's representation in Moscow adhere to international legal duties to provide security and provide suitable conditions for diplomatic and consular missions to function normally.

Russia expects that the Ukrainian authorities would take steps to identify and prosecute the perpetrators, as well as provide assurances that similar incidents will not occur again, according to the statement.
