The US Navy announced that it recovered a considerable quantity of guns and ammunition from a fishing vessel presumably en route from Iran to war-torn Yemen.

The US Navy's patrol warships launched an operation against a fishing vessel operating in the North Arabian Sea off the coasts of Oman and Pakistan on Thursday, the US 5th Fleet stated in a statement.

According to the statement, five Yemeni sailors were discovered on board the ship with 1,400 AK-47 assault guns and 226,600 rounds of ammunition.

The 5th Fleet, stationed in Bahrain, stated that the fishing vessel was traveling along a route to transfer illicit weapons to Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies accuse Iran of supplying weaponry to the Houthis, which Tehran denies.

Yemen has been immersed in bloodshed and turmoil since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels took control of a large portion of the nation, including the capital Sanaa.

A Saudi-led coalition seeking to restore Yemen's government has exacerbated the situation, resulting in one of the world's greatest humanitarian disasters, with roughly 80 percent of the population displaced.

According to UN estimates, 30 million people require humanitarian assistance and protection, and more than 13 million are at risk of hunger.
