The Dubai Criminal Court convicted a group of five individuals, including a fugitive, to one year in prison followed by deportation for attempting to steal a luxury vehicle "Range Rover" for Dhs685,000 following a two-day rental.
The prisoners allegedly falsified the vehicle's documentation to transport it to a Gulf country. Still, their plan was prevented by the GPS tracking device installed in the car, and they were apprehended.
The case began in January when an employee of an automobile rental shop notified the police about a delay in returning a Range Rover model 2020 rented for two days by a GCC national for Dhs3,000. The employee phoned a tracking business to locate the vehicle, which was discovered in a neighboring emirate.
The automobile was being transported by truck to be exported. The police stopped the car and arrested the driver, who confirmed that a GCC national contacted him from abroad and hired him to transfer the vehicle for Dhs2,500.
He also shared the vehicle's location with the driver and sent him the key and papers. The truck driver told authorities.
According to a police officer, the runaway criminal rented the vehicle before fleeing the nation and then communicated with the other convicts to fabricate export documentation for the car.
The officer stated that they intended to send the vehicle once the GPS device implanted in it was removed.
The criminals were identified and apprehended as a result of the investigations. They admitted to conspiring with a GCC national (fugitive) to rent the vehicle and falsify its documentation to export it once the monitoring device was removed. However, another tracking device exposed them.
They were convicted and sentenced to incarceration, followed by deportation, by the Criminal Court.
