The NFL world has been rocked by the loss of Demaryius Thomas, a former Denver Broncos wide receiver who was only 33 years old.
He was discovered dead in his Roswell, Georgia, home. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Thomas was a member of the team's winningest four-year span in franchise history from 2012 to 2015 when Peyton Manning was the quarterback. The Denver Broncos went 55-17, capturing two AFC titles and Super Bowl 50.
Manning stated that he had never played with a player as large, as strong, or as quick as Thomas, who caught 445 passes for 6,249 yards and 46 touchdowns from 2012 to 2015, including the playoffs.
Thomas' most spectacular catch, though, occurred on Jan. 8, 2012, with Tim Tebow as the quarterback in an AFC wild-card game, when he hauled in an 80-yard touchdown pass on the opening kick-off overtime to upset Pittsburgh 29-23.
Thomas was drafted 22nd overall out of Georgia Tech in the 2010 draft. He began his career with the Broncos in 2010 and was moved to the Houston Texans in 2018, and he completed his career with the Jets in 2019.
"DT was the complete package as a wide receiver, growing into one of the very best at his position," Broncos president of football operations John Elway said earlier this year when Thomas announced his retirement.
"His size, speed, strength, and athleticism were unsurpassed. Demaryius' excellent consistency and production enabled our offense to set historical records and our team to win numerous games, including two AFC championships and Super Bowl 50.
"Equally as impressive as his many catches, big plays and touchdowns was the fact he didn't miss a game for nearly seven years in a row."
Despite being listed on the injury report twice for finger, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, neck, calf, and hand injuries, Thomas appeared in every game over his final seven seasons in Denver.
"DT could always be relied upon. He is one of the greatest players in Broncos history, both on the field and in the community. We appreciate everything Demaryius has done for us and wish him well in his NFL retirement," Elway said.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl five straight seasons, beginning in 2012 and concluding in 2016, when Trevor Siemian took over as quarterback following Manning's retirement a month after winning Super Bowl 50.
He tied a team record with 14 touchdown catches in 2013 as the leading scorer on the league's most productive offense, which scored a league-high 606 points. His best statistical season came a year later, when he amassed 111 catches for 1,619 yards, setting a career-high.
