Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Thursday that the American intervention in the Asia Pacific region can push the region into the ‘Confrontational Cold War Era,’ which the region can not afford.
According to the Chinese National News Agency Xinhua, Xi said, “ We should all be broad-minded, follow the underlying trend of the times and proactively expand opening-up.”
The remarks of the Chinese president came when he was delivering a keynote speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO (APEC) Summit via a video message.
Jinping added that the region should advance its “trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, keep industrial and supply chains stable and functioning, and promote the orderly flow of resources and inputs to boost economic recovery and achieve interconnected development.”
He said, “The Asia-Pacific region cannot and should not relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era.”
Xi’s remarks came as the USA has increased its presence in the region and has been allying against what it calls Chinese “coercion”. The attempts of increasing presence include the Quad grouping with India, Japan, and Australia.
As Xi stated that the region's most important goal was to emerge from the shadow of the epidemic and achieve steady economic recovery and that nations must narrow the COVID-19 immunization gap.
“We should translate the consensus that vaccines are a global public good into concrete actions to ensure their fair and equitable distribution,” Xi said about the vaccine imperialism and the hoarding of vaccines.
At a special conference in June, APEC nations committed to increasing the sharing and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines and removing trade barriers for pharmaceuticals.
