According to the US Geological Survey, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on November 1, however there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage (USGS).
The quake struck at a depth of 6 kilometres, about 255 kilometres south of the town of Sinabang.
Indonesia is shaken by thousands of earthquakes per year due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc-shaped area of regular seismic activity.
