Officials confirmed Monday that Barclays bank CEO James "Jes" Staley is stepping down amid a British inquiry into his ties to convicted businessman and sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein.
The Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority in the United Kingdom are investigating Staley's relationship with Epstein, who committed suicide in a New York City jail two years ago while facing sex trafficking charges.
Monday, the bank said it and Staley came to the decision to resign after they were made aware of preliminary results of the investigation on Friday.
