The United States and Israel, according to a top Iranian military official, are to blame for this week's hack on Iran's gas distribution network.
The enormous hack, according to Brig. Gen. Gholam Reza Jalali, head of Iran's Civil Defense Organization, was part of a "wave of US-Israeli attacks" that earlier hit Iran's railway infrastructure in July 2021 and Shahid Rajaei Port in May 2020.
The hack, which targeted software that facilitates smart card payment for subsidized fuel and occurred last Tuesday, caused considerable disruption and panic at gas stations around Iran.
It was eventually determined to be a high-intensity cyberattack, after officials initially dismissed it as a "technical problem."
Jalali claimed that the current attack followed the same pattern as the previous two, blaming it on the United States and Israel.
"In our opinion, the planners of these attacks are definitely the Americans and the Zionist (Israeli) regime," he asserted.
The person claimed the attack, which brought the country's enormous fuel supply system to a halt, targeted "the middleware" in the system, making it tough to thwart it.
He cautioned that Iran is engaged in "serious infrastructure cyber warfare," which should be "taken seriously" and "weaknesses addressed."
