Officials in South Korea and Japan say North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile off its east coast on Tuesday, as Seoul launches a major arms exhibition, spy chiefs meet to discuss the nuclear standoff, and South Korea prepares for a space mission.
The launch would be North Korea's latest weapons test, as the country has continued to expand its arsenal despite international restrictions imposed over its nuclear and missile programs.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff reported one ballistic missile was launched around 10:17 a.m. local time (9:17 p.m. Monday ET) from the neighborhood of Sinpo, where North Korea has submarines and facilities for testing submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Other types of missiles have also been launched from the area by North Korea.
