An errant Syrian anti-air missile that burst off the shore, according to the IDF, triggered the explosions heard over central Israel tonight.
There were no sirens, and no injuries or property damage were reported in Israel.
The projectile was launched after Syria's air defenses were reported to have shot down Israeli missiles over the capital Damascus.
In a statement broadcast on state television, a Syrian military source said, "The Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction southeast of Beirut, targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus,"
Syrian television broadcasted footage of air defenses firing at targets above the city.
"Our air defense confronted the aggressor's missiles and shot down most of them, and the losses were limited to materiel," the statement stated.
The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment on the alleged strike in Syria.
According to the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights, the purported Israeli strikes targeted weapons research centers near Damascus utilized by Iran-backed militias.
Syrian surface-to-air missile systems (SAM) fired on claimed Israeli bombings on Damascus on August 20th, killing four pro-Iranian fighters. According to Russian military officials, the attack resulted in the downing of 22 Israeli missiles.
