After an agonizing separation from Barcelona, where he had spent his entire professional career, Messi joined the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on August 10th. After being left out of the squad's starting eleven, his eagerly anticipated debut has been postponed multiple times.
Lionel Messi's first season with PSG did not please football fans.
With PSG ahead 2-0 in their away match against Reims on Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino chose to replace Neymar with Messi in the 66th minute.
The switch was thought to be more of a symbolic gesture than an attempt to affect a game that the Parisians had already written off. Messi still needs time to adjust to his new squad and get in shape, according to Pochettino. The legendary striker failed to score and only had one shot on target.
Fans were furious with Pochettino's choice and Messi's brief presence, instantly rushing to Twitter to express their disgust.
Messi has previously missed two PSG games due to his absence from the starting lineup.
On a free transfer, the 34-year-old attacker agreed to join PSG for $82.8 million. It is expected to run two seasons, with the option of an additional year.
After failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension, Messi left Barcelona. He made his Catalan debut in 2004 and has remained with the club ever since. During his time with Barca, the Argentine great won the Spanish Championship ten times, the Spanish Cup seven times, and the Champions League four times.
